Description
This design was inspired by Man Ray’s lifelong friendship with avid chess player and fellow artist Marcel Duchamp. In this re-imaging of the original 1920s Wooden Chess Set, we translate Man Ray’s traditional chess pieces in geometric forms with the power of 3D printing.
This minimalist Man Ray chess set requires a board suitable for the size selected.
Custom Larger Size:
The King measures 4″ tall, and 2″ square.
This set is best suited for a 20″ x 20″ board (with 2.5″ squares).
Possible color options are shown in the photo.
Please note:
The set includes small screws and each piece has a chamber to add weight (sand, etc).
The king is a pyramid, the queen is a cone, the bishop is a flagon, the rook is a cube and the pawn is a sphere. Man Ray, the American icon of Dada and Surrealism who has more than 100 works in MoMA’s collection, made his now-classic chess set with found objects from around his studio. The knight, perhaps the most striking piece, is represented by a scroll-shaped violin finial.
